Chapter Five

Leo settled on the bench seat and sighed. His chest hurt, but in a good way. For the most part, he’d done what he’d set out to do and didn’t regret the changes. Once he sorted things out with Axl, he’d be set. He waited for Axl to sit beside him and close the door before he spoke.

“Well, what do you think?” Leo asked. He loved the changes he’d gone through and wanted Axl to agree. Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be the same if Axl wasn’t happy with him.

“I like them.”

“You do?” Interesting. If he nudged Axl, maybe, he could get more answers from him.

“Your hair—I like it, too.” The tips of Axl’s ears burned red, and he wouldn’t meet Leo’s gaze.

“Axl? I’m shocked.” He liked his lover’s honesty. Axl baring his soul was sexy. “Did you mean what you said? You want to spend Valentine’s Day with me?” He wanted that more than anything.

“I do.” Axl finally met Leo’s gaze. “I want to spend it with you. Even though I’m not the man you love.” He tensed and balled his hands. His knee bounced.

“I never said that.” Leo hadn’t told anyone who he loved—not in so many words.

Axl shook his head. “Leo.” He grunted. “You deserve a shifter who isn’t me. I don’t know. Someone who isn’t short with you, who doesn’t growl all the time and who isn’t scared to admit how he feels.”

“I know you.” Despite the pain in his chest, Leo cuddled against Axl’s side. Axl was selling himself short for no reason.

“I can’t explain myself. I hear myself talk, and I want to hide. My lion’s strong, but the human side of me isn’t a good man. I’m a disaster.”

“You’re a good man.” Leo palmed Axl’s cheek. Blood rushed below his belt and filled his cock. His skin prickled, and he could’ve sworn the temperature in the car spiked. “You’re a strong shifter and a great man.”

“Leo.” Axl shook his head again.

“Like I said, I know you. As much as getting holes in my body and cutting my hair is uncomfortable for me, this is scary and doesn’t feel very good to you. I’m not scared to tell you how I feel. I love you.” There. He’d said it. No regrets, and boy, he felt lighter. His lion curled up within him and settled. He’d done the right thing.

“You do?” Axl’s eyebrows rose, and his lips parted. His eyes widened.

“Nothing’s going to change my mind.” He kissed Axl. The freedom of being honest was hot. He smoothed his hand across Axl’s chest and pinched one of Axl’s nipples through the fabric of his shirt. When Axl moaned, Leo swallowed the noise. He loved the hunger glowing in Axl’s eyes.

“Leo.” Axl broke the kiss first. He curled his fingers under Leo’s chin.

“Right here.” He nipped Axl’s bottom lip. “John’s coming.”

“I want to go home.”

“Me, too.” Leo grinned and settled in his seat. He rested his head on Axl’s shoulder.

John settled behind the wheel. “Ready?”

“Yes.” Leo closed his eyes.
